Door-to-door dog adventures

Dog adventures in Darwen

Darwen dogs live between India Mill's chimney and the tower on the moor, and most of them have never been up to the tower. Sunnyhurst Wood climbs straight out of the town onto Darwen Moor — the moor Darwen won back for walkers in 1896, with the Jubilee Tower on top to prove it — and from Wednesday 9 September a big yellow bus collects door-to-door across BB3, from Darwen town, Whitehall and Sunnyhurst to Hoddlesden, Eccleshill, Lower Darwen and Tockholes, and takes the afternoon up there.

It isn't a quick lead-walk round Bold Venture Park, though the park is on the rotation with the moor above it. An adventure is a whole afternoon: a group capped at twelve, six dogs to each qualified walker, matched by temperament before anyone's first trip — leads on near the sheep, proper sniffing everywhere else. No crates on the bus; every dog rides harnessed in a pup pod with a window seat, and you watch the route on a live map from your door and back to it.

Blackburn & Darwen runs Wednesday afternoons every week — collected after 12:30, home by half three — with more days opened as routes fill. Some Wednesdays the bus heads the other way: Roddlesworth's forest through Tockholes, the reservoir loop at Entwistle, or Witton's 480 acres on the Blackburn side. Photos land in your dashboard the same evening, with a short honest note on how your dog got on.

Where Darwen dogs go

Real adventures, not laps of the block

Sunnyhurst Wood & Darwen Tower

the home walk — the wooded clough from the town edge up to the tower and the moor beyond.

Bold Venture Park & Darwen Tower

the Victorian park and its lake on the Bolton Road side, with the long pull up onto the moor from the top of it.

Darwen Moor West (Crookfield Road)

the open moor from the Tockholes side — big skies and miles of track.

Roddlesworth Woods (Ryal Fold, Tockholes)

forest and reservoir trails ten minutes over the hill.

Turton & Entwistle Reservoir (Edgworth side)

the forest shoreline loop from Batridge Barn, down the valley past Edgworth.

The day's destination is published a week ahead on the adventure calendar, so you choose the trips your dog will love most.
